Why Teacher Education ?

GMIT Letterfrack offers a post-primary teacher education programme, the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Education (Design Graphics and Construction).

Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach Construction Studies and Design and Communication Graphics up to Leaving Certificate level.

This is a very dynamic and exciting programme, and GMIT Letterfrack has adopted modern and innovative learning and teaching methods to ensure that graduates are well-equipped to become excellent teachers. During this programme, students spend time each year on school placement, where students get to experience teaching in a supportive environment.

With a strong emphasis on project-based learning, students on programmes develop a range of technological, design and pedagogical skills necessary for this teaching discipline, and learn how to apply those skills in ways that are innovative and creative. Students develop a professional ePortfolio and undertake mock interviews as part of their preparation for entering the teaching profession.

The equipment and teaching facilities available to students on campus are highly specialised, and students undertake projects which are relevant, challenging and exciting. Students spend the first two years of this programme studying at GMIT Letterfrack, before relocating to GMIT Galway for the final two years.

GMIT also offers a post-primary teacher education programme in its Centre for Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) in Galway city.

Graduates of this degree, the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Art, Design and Graphics, are qualified to teach Art and Design and Communication Graphics in Irish secondary schools.

Students on this four-year honours degree will develop their creative skills and learn and apply new digital technologies. There is a strong practical focus with carefully designed projects, and students learn in small group sizes.

Students undertake a school placement every year in a range of educational settings, predominantly within post-primary schools.

Design-led projects focused on design, art techniques, CAD and graphics ensure graduates are competent and confident in their role as a professional teacher.
