The Outdoor Education courses respond to an increasing demand for professionals in the adventure tourism market, in environmental education and in the outdoor education sector. The courses at GMIT provide a coherent, multidisciplinary career path for those wishing to pursue a varied and stimulating career.
There are over 100 adventure centres in Ireland, and our graduates find employment as instructors and development workers in adventure and outdoor education centres and other organisations offering adventure sports as part of their programmes: youth organisations, schools offering outdoor education programmes and further education, residential childcare centres and social care organisations. Many Outdoor Education graduates from GMIT currently work in settings where they facilitate personal and social development using outdoor activities, with organisations including Foróige, Crosscare, Youth Diversion and Justice Projects, COPE, Youthreach, Barretstown, Outward Bound, Sail Training Ireland and School Completion Officers.
In adventure tourism, a wide range of positions are available, such as guides for walking, canoeing and cycling tours. There are increasing opportunities in nature kindergartens, forest schools, ecotourism and in nature and ecotheraphy. In all of these organisations, our graduates have the appropriate education and training to progress to coordinator and management level.
